In early 2023, Studio TJP officially incorporated LiDAR 3D scanning into our record drawing creation process. After testing the technology on several homes, we found this method to be both accurate and fast, providing the detailed information necessary for the start of new home renovation or remodel projects.
LiDAR has proven particularly useful for scanning around furniture or bulky stored items, as well as collecting detailed architectural information such as room dimensions, window and door details, fireplace mantels, trim, and other visible structural elements. Using LiDAR, we can scan an environment and collect detailed data points, which are then converted into a colorized 3D space. This data is used to create an accurate, 3D model in ArchiCAD.
We have found that LiDAR scanning not only requires fewer personnel but also saves hours, or even days, of work while collecting precise measurements of interior and exterior spaces.
Recently, we had the opportunity to work with a client on Whidbey Island with a two-story, four-bedroom home. Traditional methods for recording the existing conditions of a building involve taking physical measurements of every wall, door, window, and other architectural details using a tape or laser measure. While accurate, this technique can be time-consuming and usually requires at least two people fully focused on measuring. With LiDAR scanning, a single person can completely and accurately capture representations of the environment in less than half the time of traditional methods. LiDAR utilizes comprehensive data capture, taking large amounts of data, including detailed measurements, texture, color, shape, and layout, which aids in creating more accurate models.
By embracing the latest technological advancements and innovative solutions, like LiDAR scanning, Studio TJP is committed to providing our clients with the most accurate and efficient architectural services possible. We continue to strive to assist our clients, enabling them to bring their building projects to life in the most cost-effective and timely manner.
